The Devil’s Sack

“Devil, O Devil! What have we here?
is your sack filled with cow-dung
or cheer?
“Perhaps, pale souls, you stole—
long ago, from temples, far and near?”

[The Devil says:]

“Why was Christ a loving Son? A mission!
A mission, my impudent human; He came
down from heaven (like I)
to save everyone, and die;
It was simply His Mission, contrary to mine.

“And away I fly, ever-so joyful, around
the globe…the world is my haven, my goal!

“It’s what I feel I was created to do: of
course we all say that don’t we—such fools?

“Anyhow, in this sack, lapped across
my wing filled back—are little gnats
(and stones) prideful little things from hell,
sucks the marrow out of the soul!

“And these stones, part cobweb, part bones
I sprinkle them all over kingdom-come…
that’s my mission~!...my son.
